About The Harper Agency
History Of The Winfred C. Harper Agency, Inc.
In 1947 the founder and namesake of the agency, Winfred C. “Ook” Harper, received his honorable discharge from the United States Navy and returned home to Burlington, NC. He met his future bride, Mary Frances Brooks and they were married in August of that year. On September 1, Mr. Harper began his career in insurance as an agent for the Worth L. Thompson Agency in Graham, NC and on September 15, 1947 he wrote his first policy – Automobile Liability covering a 1937 Chevrolet.
In 1949 Mr. Harper started his own agency and hired his first employee, wife Frances. The agency grew in size and stature over the years and in 2003 the Harper Agency became one of six North Carolina pioneer partners in Keystone Insurers Group. Keystone is now one of the largest and most respected privately owned insurance agencies in the country.
With the death of Mr. Harper in 2010, his two sons, Steve and Jim and daughter, Sharon Spears, all active in the agency for many years, became owner-managers. They are now carrying forward the guiding principle of their father – to provide every policyholder, large or small, with a quality of service and value unequaled in our area.
In closing, we are proud to say that our very first policyholder is still a satisfied customer of the Harper Agency.
